Take time to stop and smell the...digital signage?

Posted by Nate in MetricsInteractivityEmerging Technologies

Today's news brought in some interesting information on the integration of digital signage: signage with smells. That's right, Recruit Co. Ltd. has placed digital signage screens in various locales and is pumping out fumes to lure passers-by. Is this effective or just another way digital signage is polluting the environment?

This idea came to me several months ago as well. I'm sure some signage companies will try to attract through the rest of the five senses. Maybe if something reached our and touched passers, or there was something to lick after the customer is drawn to the screen. Lickable digital signage might allow a taste test of a steak offered at the local grill. Just a thought. I guess it depends on how intrusive--or weird--you'd like the signage to be.

The company involved is measuring results with coupon booklets that can be taken from near the screens. The booklets contain coupons for the restaurants where the screens are located. Setting up a camera and watching reactions would be interesting as well--especially if you could change the smells on command. At any rate, when this is all said and done it'll be interesting to see what type of response rates are gleaned.
