This post parallels an article I wrote about previously, outlining some future options dealing with digital signage connectivity. If you’re curious about my chosen title, you’ll be interested to know that MediaTile owns the trademark for “Cellular Digital Signage.” So, in an effort to not make enemies, I’ve decided to do a little Mad Gab version of cellular digital signage. In my opinion, “cellular digital signage” is a very broad term to have trademarked and is a bit stifling for other wireless digital signage providers, but that’s just me.
At any rate, the news today had information on Google’s push for “white spaces” or “WiFi 2.0” in their effort to make internet connectivity more universal. Obviously Google is not 100% altruistic in their reasoning for wanting to establish such an initiative, but it’s not like the public is going to be against it either.
There are a few groups putting up a stink about it, including the National Association of Broadcasters and wireless microphone companies, who both claim the initiative will interrupt their broadcast capabilities. Apparently some members of Congress agree with them. Apart from the minority (who incidentally have quite a bit of power), the initiative would mean a push for free information exchange.
But what would it mean for Digital Signage?
Probably not much, at least for now. I’m sure such a network would not want to see a drop in speeds due to bandwidth hogging HD digital signage vendors doing a daily upload to their network. However, I’m sure there will be ways these systems will be able to work together in unique ways. And, I’m sure eventually WiMax and Digital Signage will be able to coexist peacefully.
