AlivePromo to develop World’s first citywide Digital Skyway Navigation System in Downtown Saint Paul PDF Print E-mail

SAINT PAUL, MN – The City of Saint Paul and AlivePromo today announced the first phase of an interactive digital navigation system throughout the downtown Saint Paul skyway network.  The system, the first of its kind in the world, will be developed by local digital signage company AlivePromo and integrated throughout the city into digital building directories, several of which will be installed prior to the Republican National Convention.

When completed, the navigation system will allow skyway pedestrians to press a skyway button on the screen of a digital building directory, initiating the display of a skyway map and the location.  The user will have the ability to search landmarks, retail and attractions by category, and locate other buildings within the skyway, among other features.  Selecting a destination will then trigger a “wayfinding” action, showing the best route based on traffic patterns and the time of day.

The project, a collaborative effort between the City of St. Paul, the CapitolRiver Council, the city’s building owners, and AlivePromo, Inc., was the result of AlivePromo CEO Sam Rogers working with city leaders, who were quick to see the benefits of creating a citywide network.  The City and Rogers then partnered to bring in building property managers to participate in the building the directory infrastructure. When the project is complete, interactive mapping technology will help visitors navigate St. Paul’s skyway system.

“Multiple stakeholders are working together to produce a very innovative project,” says Rogers.  “It will help visitors and residents get to their destinations, and it brings St. Paul to the forefront of technology.”

“Saint Paul attracts millions of visitors throughout the year, for business, for sports, and for family outings,” Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman said. “These digital kiosks enhance the friendly atmosphere in downtown and will help all of our visitors and residents discover the great shops, restaurants, museums, and convenient parking that make the Most Livable City in America a great place to visit.”

Visitors can catch a glimpse of the project that has already been installed at the First National Bank building and Securian, others to be installed later this week include the RiverCenter and the downtown St. Paul Central Library.  As of today, touching the skyway button generates a map with zoom tools, with the full navigation programming scheduled for launch, along with installation in at least six other buildings, by the 2008 holidays.  The eventual goal is to have every St. Paul building on the network.

“The response to the new directories has been very positive," says Tanya Hemphill, Cushman & Wakefield's General Manager of the First National Bank Building.  "The interactive component and various messaging opportunities are holding appeal for visitors and tenants alike.  We expect even greater interest with the launch of the navigation system.”
