IoT digital signage examples: 60 sensor-triggered scenarios

Quick answer: DigitalSignage.com has published 60 short clips of IoT digital signage, and in each one a sensor, beacon, button or live data feed changes what the screen shows. This page lists every scenario with its trigger and the on-screen result, grouped by industry, and links to each clip; all 60 are also in one YouTube playlist and on the interactive demo page.

Key facts

  • 60 scenarios across 13 industry groups and 26 settings, from retail shelves and restaurant waitlists to data-center racks and farm livestock.
  • 58 distinct triggers. By family: presence and proximity 17, live data feeds 15, environment 14, machines and inventory 10, tap, scan and wearables 4.
  • Every clip is 8 seconds long and shows one beat: the environment, the trigger, and the screen reacting.
  • The clips are AI-generated concept visualisations made to explain a mechanism. They are not recordings of customer installations, and the YouTube uploads carry the altered-content label.
  • Published on the DigitalSignage.com YouTube channel on October 30, 2026; the same clips play from this site on the demo page with a filter per industry.
  • DigitalSignage.com documents two integration paths for triggers like these: the Raspberry Pi SignPlayer's GPIO pins for directly wired sensors, buttons and relays, and the SignService API for external systems and data feeds.

How does a sensor change what a screen shows?

Every scenario below follows the same four steps, whatever the sensor:

  1. Detect. A sensor or data source produces an event: a PIR sensor sees motion, a shelf scale drops below a threshold, a booking system frees a room, a weather feed reports rain.
  2. Decide. A rule on a controller or in the signage platform maps the event to a content change: which screen, which scene or playlist, for how long, and what to show when the condition clears.
  3. Switch. The signage player receives the instruction and changes the content, usually within a second or two of the event.
  4. Revert. When the condition ends or a timer runs out, the screen returns to its scheduled loop.

In DigitalSignage.com the detect step can run on the Raspberry Pi SignPlayer, whose GPIO pins connect to sensors, buttons, LEDs and relays, or in an external system that calls the SignService API. The sensor families, protocols and gateway options are covered in the IoT and sensors guide; this page is the catalogue of what the result looks like on screen.

Which triggers come up most?

Grouping the 60 triggers by what they sense shows where IoT signage earns its keep:

Trigger familyScenariosTypical sensors in the clips
Presence and proximity17PIR motion sensor, Occupancy sensor, BLE beacon, Door / footfall sensor, Crowd-density sensor, Vehicle GPS feed
Live data feeds15Parking bay sensors, Queue sensor, Smart energy meter, Vibration sensor, Panic button, Smart-oven signal
Environment14Fire-alarm trigger, Temperature sensor, Weather / rain sensor, Air-quality sensor, Water-leak sensor, Ambient-light sensor
Machines and inventory10Shelf push-button, Shelf weight sensor, Dispenser level sensor, Smart-lock event, Inventory sensor, Medical-fridge sensor
Tap, scan and wearables4NFC tag, RFID scanner, Voice microphone, RFID hook

Bottom line: presence, proximity and environmental sensors cover most scenarios, and they are also the cheapest to wire: a PIR sensor, a temperature probe or a BLE beacon costs a few dollars and connects to a Raspberry Pi GPIO header directly.

What makes an IoT signage scenario worth building?

The clips were chosen to show four patterns that repeat across industries:

  • Wake and attract. Motion, presence and beacon triggers wake a sleeping screen or switch it from ambient content to an offer when someone is close enough to read it (retail window, motion-activated wake-up, beacon welcome).
  • Status boards. Occupancy, booking, order and inventory events keep a board truthful without anyone typing: meeting-room status, desk availability, housekeeping, kitchen orders, vending stock, parking counts.
  • Safety overrides. Fire alarms, lockdown buttons, seismic sensors, leak detectors and crowd-density counters take over every screen with routing or instructions, then release it when the condition clears.
  • Context-aware promotion. Weather, temperature, UV, traffic and time-of-day data pick the message that fits the moment: cold drinks in a heatwave, soup in the rain, an alternate-route advisory in a jam.

A scenario is worth building when the trigger is reliable, the content change is unambiguous, and the screen would otherwise show stale information. The status-board and safety patterns pay back fastest because they remove a manual task or a risk.

Frequently asked questions

Are these IoT digital signage examples real installations?

No. The 60 clips are AI-generated concept visualisations published by DigitalSignage.com to show what sensor-triggered signage does: each one shows a setting, a trigger and the screen reacting. They are labelled as altered or synthetic content on YouTube and are not recordings of customer sites.

What sensors can trigger digital signage content?

The clips use 58 different triggers, including PIR motion and presence sensors, Bluetooth beacons, NFC and RFID readers, temperature, CO2, UV, light, sound, soil-moisture and leak sensors, shelf weight sensors, occupancy and booking systems, push buttons and alarm contacts, and live data feeds such as transit, traffic, parking and weather.

How do I connect a sensor to a DigitalSignage.com screen?

Two documented paths: wire the sensor, button or relay to the GPIO pins of a Raspberry Pi running SignPlayer, which can read the input and change content or drive an output, or have an external system send the event through the SignService API. The IoT pages on digitalsignage.com describe both; for a specific sensor model, ask support.

Which industries use IoT digital signage?

The examples cover 13 groups: retail, hospitality and food service, workplace, smart buildings and facilities, safety, smart city and transit, industry and logistics, healthcare, venues and events, education, fitness, agriculture and smart home. Retail and hospitality have the most scenarios because presence and order events are easy to sense and the content change is immediate.

Where can I watch all 60 clips?

On the DigitalSignage.com YouTube channel in the playlist IoT Digital Signage Examples, and on the interactive demo page at digitalsignage.com, which plays the same clips with a filter per industry. Each row in the tables above links to its clip.

Does IoT signage need a Raspberry Pi?

Not necessarily. A Raspberry Pi is the simplest way to wire a physical sensor directly because the SignPlayer for Raspberry Pi exposes GPIO, but any trigger that already exists as data, such as a booking system, a POS order or a weather feed, can reach the screens through the SignService API from whatever system holds it, with the player on Windows, Android, Chrome OS or a browser.

Try it on your own screens, free

DigitalSignage.com, which publishes this guide, runs a permanent free plan: the first 3 screens are free forever (no credit card, no ads, no time limit), then from $3 per screen per month with volume pricing via a public calculator. The free SignPlayer runs on Windows, Mac, Android, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi and any browser. Create a free account and connect your first sensor.
