What is Interactive Digital Signage?

Interactive digital signage is digital signage that responds to the person in front of it. Instead of a fixed playlist, the screen reacts to touch, a phone, a sensor or a gesture and shows what that viewer asked for: a directory entry, a menu item, a product, a check-in form. Interactive digital signage (also called interactive signage, touch screen signage or, when it lives in an enclosure, a kiosk) turns a one-way display into a two-way one. The viewer chooses what to see, and in many cases completes a task on the screen: ordering food, finding an office, checking in for an appointment, browsing a catalogue, signing a visitor log.

Definition

Interactive digital signage is electronically controlled signage whose content changes in response to viewer input. The input is usually touch, but it can be a phone scanning a QR code, a motion sensor, a lift-and-learn sensor on a product shelf, a camera detecting presence, or a voice command. The response is defined in software: a button fires an event, and other elements on the screen (or on other screens in the room) react to it.

Three things separate it from a plain playlist screen:

  1. Input. A touch overlay, tablet digitizer, sensor or phone acts as the control.
  2. Logic. Scenes, events and timers decide what happens on each interaction, including returning to an attract loop when the viewer walks away.
  3. Data. Buttons are usually backed by live data: a menu, a directory, inventory, a calendar or a form that posts back to a server.

Interactive digital signage vs. kiosk

The two terms overlap and are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

Types of interaction

  • Touch. The default. PCAP (projected capacitive) overlays and tablets for indoor use; infrared frames for large or outdoor screens. Multi-touch gestures work on hardware that reports them.
  • Phone and QR. The viewer scans a code and controls the screen, or continues the session on their own device. Popular since 2020 for hygiene and for handing off a menu or map.
  • Sensors. Motion sensors wake the screen and start a scene; lift-and-learn sensors change the content when a shopper picks up a product; proximity sensors switch from attract loop to interactive mode.
  • Gesture and camera. Hand tracking or presence detection for hands-free control, common in exhibitions.
  • Voice. Speech input for accessibility and hands-free wayfinding, still a niche.

Most deployments combine an attract loop (ordinary scheduled signage while nobody is interacting) with an interactive mode that starts on the first touch and times out back to the loop. That is why interactive signage is best run from the same CMS as the rest of the screens rather than from a separate kiosk app.

How interactive digital signage works

An interactive screen has the same building blocks as any digital signage system, described in how digital signage works, with one layer added.

  1. Display with input. A commercial touch screen, a touch monitor, an interactive whiteboard or a tablet. Any display that reports touch to the player works.

How to build an interactive touch app without code

Measuring results

Because every interaction is an event, interactive signage is the most measurable form of digital signage. Track sessions, taps per scene, products viewed, orders placed and forms submitted, then cross-reference with sales or check-in counts. Use the numbers to prune scenes nobody opens and to move the most-used buttons to the first screen.
