TV and display dimensions by screen size: width and height for 32 to 98 inches

Quick answer: DigitalSignage.com computes screen dimensions from the diagonal with the 16:9 formula: width = diagonal x 0.8716 and height = diagonal x 0.4903. A 55-inch display's picture is 47.9 x 27.0 inches (121.8 x 68.5 cm), a 65-inch is 56.7 x 31.9 inches, a 75-inch is 65.4 x 36.8 inches and a 98-inch is 85.4 x 48.0 inches. Those are viewable-area sizes; bezels and the frame typically add 0.5 to 2 inches to each overall dimension, so confirm the model's spec sheet before cutting a wall or ordering a mount.

Key facts

  • For any 16:9 screen, width is 16 divided by the square root of 337 (0.8716) times the diagonal, and height is 9 divided by the square root of 337 (0.4903) times the diagonal.
  • A 55-inch 16:9 picture is 47.9 inches wide and 27.0 inches tall, an area of 8.98 square feet.
  • A 65-inch picture has 1.40 times the area of a 55-inch, and a 75-inch has 1.86 times, because area grows with the square of the diagonal.
  • A 55-inch 1080p display has about 40 pixels per inch and a 55-inch 4K display about 80; a 98-inch 4K display has about 45.
  • In portrait, width and height swap: a 55-inch display mounted vertically is 27.0 inches wide and 47.9 inches tall.
  • A 2 x 2 video wall of 55-inch panels has a picture of 95.9 x 53.9 inches, a 110-inch diagonal and 35.9 square feet, before bezels.

How do you calculate a TV's width and height from its diagonal?

Multiply the diagonal by 0.8716 for the width and by 0.4903 for the height. The two factors come from the 16:9 shape and the Pythagorean theorem: a 16 by 9 rectangle has a diagonal of the square root of 16 squared plus 9 squared, which is the square root of 337, or 18.358. Width is 16 over 18.358 of the diagonal, and height 9 over 18.358.

Width  = diagonal x 16 / sqrt(337) = diagonal x 0.8716
Height = diagonal x 9 / sqrt(337) = diagonal x 0.4903
Area (sq ft) = width (in) x height (in) / 144
PPI = sqrt(horizontal pixels^2 + vertical pixels^2) / diagonal (in)

The same method works for any ratio r (width divided by height): width = diagonal x r / sqrt(r squared + 1) and height = diagonal / sqrt(r squared + 1). For a 4:3 screen that gives width = diagonal x 0.8 and height = diagonal x 0.6, the familiar 3-4-5 triangle.

The diagonal on the box is the measurement of the lit picture area, corner to corner. Many TVs are sold as a size "class", and the measured diagonal can be slightly smaller than the class number; a 65-inch class model may measure 64.5 inches, for example. The formula gives the exact picture size for the diagonal you feed it, so use the measured diagonal from the spec sheet when precision matters.

What are the dimensions of 32 to 98 inch TVs and displays?

The table gives the viewable picture size of every common signage size, computed with the 16:9 formula and rounded to one decimal. Overall cabinet dimensions are larger by the bezel and frame, typically 0.5 to 2 inches in each direction on current displays; commercial narrow-bezel and video wall panels sit at the low end.

98 in85.448.0217.0122.028.502.652245

Bottom line: a 55-inch picture is about 4 feet wide and a 98-inch about 7 feet wide, and the area grows 1.7 to 1.9 times with each step from 55 to 75 to 98 inches.

The PPI columns use 1920 x 1080 and 3840 x 2160. Pixel density falls as the screen grows, because the same pixel count is spread over a larger picture, which is why large screens need 4K or more viewing distance to look sharp. The same PPI values appear in our typography and viewing distance guide, where they set physical text height.

Area is the honest way to compare sizes. A 65-inch display is only 18 percent longer on the diagonal than a 55-inch, but its picture has 40 percent more area; a 75-inch has 86 percent more. When a buyer says a bigger screen "did not look much bigger" in the shop and "looks huge" on the wall, the square of the diagonal is the reason.

What are the dimensions of a TV mounted in portrait?

In portrait, width and height swap, and nothing else changes. A 55-inch display on a portrait mount is 27.0 inches wide and 47.9 inches tall, and its pixel grid becomes 1080 x 1920 or 2160 x 3840. The table is useful for kiosk enclosures, door-side menu boards and wayfinding totems, where height is the constraint.

Bottom line: a 55-inch portrait screen stands about 4 feet tall and 2.25 feet wide, and a 43-inch portrait screen about 3.1 by 1.8 feet.

Not every display is approved for portrait use, and some consumer TVs void the warranty or run hotter when turned on their side. Commercial displays usually state portrait support on the spec sheet. The content and output rotation are covered in portrait screens and rotation, and the hardware side in commercial displays.

Which screen size should you choose for a wall and a viewing distance?

Choose the size from the viewing distance first and then check that it fits the wall. Our screen size and viewing distance guide matches 32 to 43 inches to viewers at 3 to 6 feet, 49 to 55 inches at 6 to 10 feet, 65 to 75 inches at 10 to 15 feet and 85 to 98 inches at 15 to 25 feet.

Bottom line: read the viewing distance, pick the size band, then confirm the wall has the picture width plus bezel plus at least an inch of clearance on each side.

The clear-wall column adds the low and high bezel allowance and 1 inch of clearance on each side to the smallest and largest picture width in the band: for example, 27.9 + 0.5 + 2 = 30.4 inches and 37.5 + 2 + 2 = 41.5 inches. Recessed and enclosed installs need more than 1 inch for ventilation; follow the display maker's clearance figures and our mounting and installation guide.

How big is a video wall made of 55-inch screens?

A 2 x 2 wall of 55-inch panels has a picture of 95.9 x 53.9 inches (243.5 x 137.0 cm), a diagonal of 110 inches and an area of 35.9 square feet, plus the seams. A 3 x 3 wall is 143.8 x 80.9 inches (365.3 x 205.5 cm), a 165-inch diagonal and 80.8 square feet. The diagonal of an N x N wall is simply N times the panel diagonal.

Seams add very little on narrow-bezel wall panels: a combined bezel of 3.5 mm is 0.14 inches per seam, so a 2 x 2 wall grows by about 0.14 inches in each direction, and the outer frame adds the panels' outer bezel. Consumer TVs used as a wall have far wider bezels, which is why walls use dedicated panels. Pixel density stays the same as one panel: a 2 x 2 wall of 1080p panels is 3840 x 2160 over 110 inches, about 40 pixels per inch, exactly like one 55-inch 1080p screen.

Weight and mounting matter more than width on a wall. Dedicated video wall mounts, power and signal routing and the wall's structure are the installer's job, and our video walls hardware guide covers bezel widths, controllers and installed budgets.

Worked example: fitting a screen into a 60-inch wall alcove

A cafe has an alcove between two pillars that is 60 inches wide and 40 inches tall, and customers read the menu from about 12 feet. The owner wants the biggest screen that fits with at least 1 inch of clearance on each side.

StepCalculationResult
1. Size band from viewing distance12 ft falls in the 10 to 15 ft band65 to 75 inches
2. Maximum overall width60 - 1 - 158.0 in
3. 75-inch picture width75 x 0.871665.4 in, too wide before any bezel
4. 65-inch picture width65 x 0.871656.7 in
5. 65-inch overall width56.7 + 0.5 to 56.7 + 257.2 to 58.7 in
6. Bezel budget58.0 - 56.7The model's bezels may add at most 1.3 in in total
7. 65-inch height65 x 0.4903 = 31.9, plus up to 2 inAt most 33.9 in, inside the 40 in alcove
8. Fallback55 x 0.8716 = 47.9; plus up to 2 in = 49.9Fits with about 5 in each side
9. Text size on the 65-inch at 12 ftBody text of 12 + 2.4 x 12 = 40.8 pt on a 1080p canvasUse 42 pt or larger for menu items

Bottom line: a 65-inch display fits the 60-inch alcove only if its overall width is 58.0 inches or less, so pick a narrow-bezel model and check the spec sheet; otherwise drop to 55 inches.

Step 6 is the one people skip. The formula gives the picture, not the box, and in a tight alcove an extra inch of frame turns a perfect fit into a return. Measure the alcove at several heights, because walls and pillars are rarely perfectly parallel, and remember that the mount, cables and power socket must fit behind the screen as well. The text sizing in step 9 comes from the typography formula linked above.

How to do this in DigitalSignage.com

Once the screen is chosen, build its content in SignStudio at the panel's native resolution, not at its physical size: a 65-inch 4K display uses the 4K UHD preset of 3840 x 2160, a 55-inch 1080p display the HD preset of 1920 x 1080, and a portrait screen the Portrait HD preset of 1080 x 1920. A video wall uses a custom scene at the combined resolution, such as 3840 x 2160 for a 2 x 2 wall of 1080p panels.

  1. Note the display's native resolution and orientation from the spec sheet.
  2. Create the scene in SignStudio with the matching preset or a custom size.
  3. Size text for the viewing distance with the typography formula, using the PPI from the table above.
  4. Install SignPlayer on the player and pair the screen with the registration code shown on it.
  5. Check the result at the real viewing distance.

SignStudio scenes are defined in pixels, so the physical dimensions on this page matter for mounting, enclosures and text sizing rather than for the software. Whether SignStudio offers a physical-size preview or a built-in screen-size calculator is not documented; for that, ask support (support@digitalsignage.com, live chat at https://chat.digitalsignage.com/).

Frequently asked questions

TV and display dimensions by screen size: width and height for 32 to 98 inches

Width is the diagonal times 0.8716 and height the diagonal times 0.4903 for a 16:9 screen. The viewable picture is 27.9 x 15.7 inches at 32 inches, 37.5 x 21.1 at 43, 47.9 x 27.0 at 55, 56.7 x 31.9 at 65, 65.4 x 36.8 at 75, 75.0 x 42.2 at 86 and 85.4 x 48.0 at 98. Bezels add about 0.5 to 2 inches to each overall dimension.

How wide is a 55 inch TV?

The picture of a 55-inch 16:9 TV is 47.9 inches (121.8 cm) wide and 27.0 inches (68.5 cm) tall. With the frame, most models measure about 48.4 to 49.9 inches across; check the spec sheet for the exact overall width.

How wide is a 65 inch TV?

The picture is 56.7 inches (143.9 cm) wide and 31.9 inches (80.9 cm) tall. With bezels, expect roughly 57.2 to 58.7 inches overall, so a 65-inch screen needs about 60 inches of wall to leave a little clearance at each side.

How wide is a 75 inch TV?

The picture is 65.4 inches (166.0 cm) wide and 36.8 inches (93.4 cm) tall, about 5.5 by 3.1 feet. Overall width with the frame is typically 65.9 to 67.4 inches.

What is the formula for TV width and height?

For 16:9: width = diagonal x 16 / sqrt(337) = diagonal x 0.8716, and height = diagonal x 9 / sqrt(337) = diagonal x 0.4903. For any ratio r, width = diagonal x r / sqrt(r squared + 1) and height = diagonal / sqrt(r squared + 1); for 4:3 that is 0.8 and 0.6 of the diagonal.

What are the dimensions of a 2 x 2 video wall of 55 inch screens?

The picture is 95.9 x 53.9 inches (243.5 x 137.0 cm), with a 110-inch diagonal and 35.9 square feet of area, plus the seams. Narrow-bezel wall panels with a 3.5 mm combined bezel add only about 0.14 inches per seam.

How many pixels per inch does a 65 inch 4K TV have?

About 68. The diagonal of 3840 x 2160 is 4,406 pixels, and 4,406 divided by 65 inches is 67.8. A 65-inch 1080p screen has about 34 pixels per inch.

Will my screen size work with digital signage software?

Yes. Signage software works in pixels, not inches, so any size works once the scene matches the panel's native resolution, such as 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160.
