Google Slides not updating on the screen: causes and fixes

Quick answer: DigitalSignage.com shows a Google Slides deck through the Web Page component in SignStudio, and when edits do not appear the cause is almost always one of four: Google has not republished the deck yet, which takes a few minutes after an edit; the Web Page component's refresh interval has not come round; the deck was shared with a link instead of published to the web; or the screen is playing exported images that were never re-exported. Wait 5 minutes, send Refresh Content from the Screens dashboard, confirm File, Share, Publish to web is on, and shorten the refresh interval for decks edited daily.

Key facts

  • A published Google Slides deck republishes itself after edits, but Google applies the change on a delay that is typically a few minutes, so an edit made at 9:00 may reach the screen at 9:05 or later.
  • The SignStudio Web Page component reloads its page at the refresh interval you set; our Google Slides guide suggests a few minutes for decks edited often and longer for decks that rarely change.
  • The published address carries 3 settings in its parameters: the delay per slide in milliseconds, autostart and loop; if any is missing the deck stops or waits for a click.
  • A published link needs an internet connection while it plays, and an outage leaves that zone blank; exported images play from the player's cache and update only when you export again.
  • The Web Page component renders on 6 DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer platforms: Windows, Mac, Android, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi and the browser player, including iPad.
  • Keep each slide on screen for 7 to 15 seconds so a passer-by sees the whole loop.
  • The first 3 screens are free forever in 2026, then from $3 per screen per month, and Google Slides itself is included with any Google account.

Why is my Google Slides deck not updating on the screen?

Because something between the edit and the panel has not refreshed: Google's published copy, the player's loaded page, or a file you exported weeks ago. Use the table to match what you see with the cause, then apply the fix in the next section.

Only one screen is stale, others updatedThat player is offline or its refresh failedCheck its status on the Screens dashboard and send Refresh Content or Restart Player to it

Bottom line: most stale decks are a refresh interval problem, and the rest are a share link where a published link was needed.

How does Publish to web update a deck?

Publish to web makes Google serve a public copy of the deck at a fixed address, and Google updates that copy on its own after every edit, with a delay. The delay is Google's and is typically a few minutes; nothing in SignStudio can shorten it, which is why an edit made seconds ago is not yet visible even on your own laptop at the published address.

A share link is different: it opens the editor view and requires a Google sign-in, so an unattended player shows a sign-in page instead of slides. Only the published address works in the Web Page component. The address also carries the timing: the delay per slide in milliseconds, autostart and loop, which is why republishing with new settings means pasting the new link into SignStudio.

How do I make the screen pick up edits faster?

Shorten the two intervals you control and leave Google's alone. Follow the steps in order; most decks are fixed by step 3.

  1. In Google Slides, choose File, Share, Publish to web, and confirm the Link tab shows the deck as published with start automatically and restart after the last slide turned on. Copy the link.
  2. In SignStudio, open the scene, select the Web Page component and compare its URL with the link you copied. Replace it if they differ.
  3. Set the component's refresh interval to a few minutes, for example 3 to 5 minutes for a deck the team edits all day, and save the scene.
  4. Publish the scene and send Refresh Content to the screen from the Screens dashboard, which forces a content sync.
  5. Wait 5 minutes after any edit before judging the result, because Google republishes on its own delay.
  6. If the screen still shows the old deck, send Restart Player, which reloads every component from scratch. Our documentation does not state whether Refresh Content or Clear Cache reloads the Web Page component's own page cache, so Restart Player is the documented way to be sure.
  7. Take a screenshot from the dashboard to confirm the new slide is on the panel.

If the deck is correct on your laptop at the published address, the refresh interval is short and a restart does not help, note the screen name, the player platform and version, and ask support at support@digitalsignage.com, live chat at https://chat.digitalsignage.com/ or +1-877-344-7446.

Use the published link for decks that change often on staff screens with a reliable connection, and export the slides for anything customers watch all day. The table compares the four ways a deck reaches a screen.

MethodHow edits reach the screenPlays offlineLooks identical on every playerBest for
DigitalSignage.com SignStudio Web Page component with the published linkAutomatically, after Google's delay plus the refresh intervalNoNo, each player's web engine renders itStaff decks edited daily
Exported PNG or JPG per slide in a playlist or Slideshow componentOnly when you export and upload againYesYesCustomer-facing loops that change weekly or less
Exported MP4 of the whole deck in a Video componentOnly when you export and upload againYesYesDecks with animations or embedded video
Rebuilt as a SignStudio scene with a Google Sheets component for the changing textAutomatically when the sheet is editedLayout yes, data shows its last valueYesPrices, schedules and specials edited by staff

Bottom line: the published link trades offline playback and identical rendering for automatic updates, and the Google Sheets component gives you the automatic updates without the trade.

What if the deck is edited every day?

Move the changing text out of the deck and into a Google Sheet, or accept the few-minute delay and set a short refresh interval. A deck that a kitchen, a school office or a front desk edits every morning works best as a SignStudio scene with a Google Sheets component: staff type into the sheet, and the screen updates in the scene's own fonts and layout, with the images and design cached on the player.

If the deck must stay a deck, agree on an edit cutoff, for example 15 minutes before opening, keep the refresh interval at 3 to 5 minutes, and put a cached fallback image behind the Web Page zone so an outage never leaves the panel blank. The Google Slides setup guide covers both routes step by step.

What does it cost to run Google Slides on screens?

The software side costs nothing for a small setup in 2026: Google Slides comes with any Google account, and DigitalSignage.com runs the first 3 screens free forever. The table shows the yearly cost at common sizes, with the player hardware that renders the Web Page component.

Setup2026 software costPlayer hardware
DigitalSignage.com free plan, 1 to 3 screens$0 forever, no credit cardA $30 to $60 Android TV stick with 2 GB of RAM per screen, or a PC you own

Bottom line: a three-screen office or church shows a daily-edited deck for $0 in software and about $45 of hardware per screen.

Frequently asked questions

Google Slides not updating on the screen: causes and fixes

Edits reach the screen after Google republishes the deck, typically a few minutes, and after the SignStudio Web Page component reloads at its refresh interval. Confirm the deck is published to the web rather than shared, set the refresh interval to a few minutes, send Refresh Content, then Restart Player if needed. Exported images never update until you export again.

Why does my Google Slides deck stop after the last slide on the screen?

The published link is missing the loop or autostart setting. Open File, Share, Publish to web, turn on start the slideshow as soon as the player loads and restart the slideshow after the last slide, republish, copy the new link and paste it into the Web Page component. The timing lives in the link, so the old link keeps the old behavior.

How long does Google take to update a published presentation?

Google republishes a published deck automatically after edits, with a delay that is typically a few minutes and is outside SignStudio's control. Add the Web Page component's refresh interval on top, so an edit at 9:00 with a 5-minute interval can take until about 9:10 to appear. Check the published address on your laptop before blaming the player.

Does Refresh Content in SignStudio reload a Google Slides deck?

Refresh Content forces a content sync and is the first thing to send. Our documentation does not state whether it or Clear Cache reloads the Web Page component's own page cache, so if the deck is still stale after Refresh Content, send Restart Player, which reloads every component from scratch, then confirm with a screenshot.

Why does the screen show a Google sign-in page instead of my slides?

The deck was shared with a link rather than published to the web. A share link opens the editor view and needs a signed-in Google user, which an unattended player does not have. Use File, Share, Publish to web, copy the published link and paste that into the Web Page component.

Does Google Slides update on the screen without internet?

No. A published link is fetched live, so during an outage the zone goes blank and no edits arrive until the connection returns. Exported images or an MP4 play from the player's local cache throughout an outage, which is why they are the right choice for customer-facing screens; keep a cached fallback image behind any live zone.

Can I show a PowerPoint deck the same way?

By exporting it. SignStudio does not list PowerPoint files as a direct upload format, so save each slide as a PNG or JPG or export the deck as an MP4, upload the result and place it in a playlist or Slideshow component. Updates then require a new export, so decks edited daily are better rebuilt as a scene with a Google Sheets component.
