Show Microsoft Teams, Slack and chat messages on digital signage

Quick answer: DigitalSignage.com puts chat messages on a screen through SignStudio components that read a feed rather than a chat client: an RSS Feed component for a channel or automation that publishes a feed, a Google Sheets component for messages an automation writes into a sheet, the Web Page component for a published page that opens without a login, and the social wall components for moderated public posts. The data integration page lists Microsoft 365 (calendar and Teams) and Slack (messages) among its pre-built connectors; ask support for the current setup steps. A DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer runs unattended with no user session, so nothing that needs a sign-in will show.

Decide what belongs on a wall first

Chat is private by default; a screen is public by default. The route you pick matters less than the rule you set: only a dedicated announcement channel, or messages a person has approved, ever reach a screen. Direct messages, private channels and anything with names of customers, patients, pay or health never do. With that settled, the technical routes are simple.

Routes that need no custom code

RouteHow the message reaches the screenUpdatesPlays offlineBest for
RSS Feed componentYour chat tool, or an automation service, publishes an announcement channel as an RSS or Atom feed; the component shows the newest itemsAt the component's refreshNo, shows last data or blankHeadlines, announcements, a ticker
Google Sheets componentAn automation appends each approved message as a row in a shared sheet; the component shows a rangeWhen the sheet changesNoShout-outs, recognition, today's notices with a human in the loop
Web Page componentA page or dashboard that renders the messages without a sign-in is loaded at a refresh intervalAt the refresh intervalNoA branded announcement board built by IT or an automation tool
Social wall and social componentsPublic posts from X, Instagram or Facebook, with moderation and approval queuesAt the component's refreshNoEvent hashtags and public community posts, not internal chat
Calendar componentOutlook or Office 365 and Google Calendar events through a connection authorized once in SignStudioAt the component's refreshNoMeeting schedules and room signs, which is what most "show Teams on a screen" requests actually need

Every live zone fetches as it plays, so during an internet outage it shows its last data or goes blank while images, video and the layout keep playing from the player's cache. Keep a cached fallback image in important zones.

Route 1: a Google Sheet with a human in the loop

The most dependable route, because approval is built in and staff never open the editor.

  1. Create a Google Sheet with columns for date, author, message and an approved flag.
  2. Use your chat platform's workflow feature or an automation service to append a row whenever a message is posted in a dedicated announcements channel, or have a moderator paste approved messages by hand.
  3. Share the sheet with the SignStudio service account, as the Google Sheets component requires.
  4. In SignStudio, add a Google Sheets component to the scene, paste the sheet's URL, select the range, for example the last 10 approved rows, and map the columns to the layout.
  5. Style it: author in small type, message in large type, 15 to 30 seconds per item.
  6. Assign the scene to the screen's campaign and publish.

A filter column lets the moderator hide a row without deleting it. The same sheet can feed a ticker zone and a full-card zone.

Route 2: a published page in the Web Page component

If IT or an automation tool can produce a web page that lists approved messages and opens without a login, show it in the Web Page component with a refresh interval of a few minutes. A SharePoint page, a Teams channel link or a Slack workspace link will not work this way: an unattended player has no Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or Slack session, so the component shows a sign-in page. Publish the data instead, as the Excel and Microsoft 365 guide describes for SharePoint and Power BI.

Route 3: the pre-built connectors

Our data integration page lists Microsoft 365 (calendar and Teams) and Slack (messages) among SignStudio's pre-built connectors, next to Google Calendar, Salesforce and the social platforms. Our documentation does not describe the setup screens or exactly what each connector shows, so ask support at support@digitalsignage.com, live chat at https://chat.digitalsignage.com/ or +1-877-344-7446 for the current steps and scope before you design a screen around them.

What needs the API or SDK

Anything that must read a chat platform directly and choose what to show, for example "the last five messages from #announcements, minus anything a moderator rejected", needs a small service of your own:

  1. A script or serverless function uses the chat platform's own API to read the approved channel.
  2. It filters and formats the messages and exposes them as a JSON endpoint, or writes them to a Google Sheet or an RSS feed.
  3. SignStudio reads the result with the JSON Data component, which documents a URL, request headers and a refresh interval with field mapping, or with the Sheets or RSS component.
  4. For pushing content into SignStudio itself, the REST API documented in the API reference covers playlists and media.

This is build-it-yourself work for a developer, not a one-click connector. The JSON route also lets you add rules the chat tool does not have, such as a profanity filter or a 10-minute delay for review.

Privacy and moderation rules for chat on screens

RuleWhy
Only a dedicated announcements channel feeds a screen; never direct messages, private channels or general chatChat is written for colleagues, not for the lobby
A person approves before display, or there is a delay long enough to pull a messageOne bad post is on a wall in front of visitors
No customer, patient, employee pay, health or personal dataPrivacy law and common sense; keep sensitive dashboards on staff-only screens
Show first names or handles only, and let people opt outRecognition should not surprise anyone
Staff-area screens for internal messages; public areas get public content onlyDifferent audiences, different rules
A retention rule: messages age off the screen after a day or a weekStale shout-outs look like nobody is watching
Keep the account's audit trail: who published what, whenSignStudio logs content changes per user

The social media walls guide covers moderation queues, keyword filters, blocklists and the consent wording for public hashtag walls, and it applies to internal walls too.

Design for a glance

  • A message zone works best as a card: author on one line, message in large type, 15 to 30 seconds per item, and a ticker for the rest.
  • Allow about 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance; long chat messages need trimming to one or two lines.
  • Put the chat zone beside evergreen content such as the calendar, the weather and a KPI, so the screen still works when nobody has posted today.
  • Schedule it: show recognition posts during working hours and switch to a quieter loop after hours with a campaign per daypart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I show Microsoft Teams, Slack and chat messages on digital signage?

Feed the screen from a source SignStudio can read without a login: publish an announcements channel as an RSS feed and use the RSS Feed component, have an automation write approved messages into a Google Sheet and use the Google Sheets component, or show a published page without a sign-in in the Web Page component. SignStudio lists Microsoft 365 and Slack among its pre-built connectors; ask support for the current setup steps. Direct messages and private channels never belong on a screen.

Can digital signage show a Teams channel directly?

Not by opening Teams. An unattended player has no Microsoft 365 user session, so a Teams link in the Web Page component shows a sign-in page. Publish the channel's content through a feed, a Google Sheet, a page without a login or the Microsoft 365 connector, and show that instead.

Can I put a Slack channel on a TV?

Yes, through a feed or a sheet. Use a Slack workflow or an automation service to post approved messages from one channel into a Google Sheet or an RSS feed, then show it with the Google Sheets or RSS Feed component in SignStudio. The data integration page also lists a Slack connector; confirm its current scope with support.

What is the easiest way to show employee shout-outs on a screen?

A Google Sheet. A moderator or an automation adds each shout-out as a row, the sheet is shared with the SignStudio service account, and a Google Sheets component shows the latest approved rows as cards in the scene. Nobody opens the editor and nothing appears without a person approving it.

Can I show Outlook or Google Calendar meetings on a screen?

Yes. The SignStudio Calendar component lists connections for Google Calendar and Outlook or Office 365, plus iCal feeds, with month, week, day, agenda and next-event views. Authorize the connection once in SignStudio; the player itself never signs in. Meeting-room screens use the same connection.

Is it safe to put chat messages on a public screen?

Only with rules: a dedicated announcements channel, a person approving before display or a delay long enough to pull a message, no personal, customer or health data, first names only with an opt-out, and public content only in public areas. Keep internal messages on staff-area screens.

When do I need a developer?

When the screen must read the chat platform directly and apply its own rules. A small service reads the channel through the platform's API, filters it and exposes JSON, a sheet or a feed that SignStudio reads with the JSON Data, Google Sheets or RSS component. The SignStudio REST API covers pushing media and playlists.
