Reset, re-register or move a SignPlayer screen to another account

Quick answer: DigitalSignage.com pairs a screen with an account through a registration code: the DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer shows a code, you type it into SignStudio under Register SignPlayer, and the screen joins that account. To move a screen, make the player show a fresh code, by clearing the app data on Android, reinstalling SignPlayer Desktop on Windows or Mac, or re-running the install script on a Raspberry Pi, then register it in the other account. A full factory reset of the device is only needed when the operating system itself is damaged or you need Android device-owner mode. Cached content is re-downloaded after registration.

How pairing works

Every native SignPlayer, on Windows, Mac, Android, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi and iPad, registers the same way:

  1. Install SignPlayer and open it. The player shows a registration code.
  2. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter that code. The screen appears in your account.
  3. Alternatively, tap register manually on the player and sign in with the DigitalSignage.com email and password of the account that should own the screen.
  4. Assign a campaign to the new screen and publish. The player downloads the content, caches it locally and starts playing.

Each registered screen counts toward the plan of the account it joined: the first 3 screens are free forever, and once an account has 4 or more screens every screen is billed from $3 per screen per month on Plus+.

Restart, Reboot, Refresh Content and Clear Cache are remote commands on the Screens dashboard in SignStudio, documented on the player management page. Try them before anything that touches the device.

Re-register the same screen

Re-registering is the fix the black screen guide lists alongside clearing the cache and updating the player. Do it when a screen no longer appears in the account, after a device was replaced, or when support asks for it.

  1. In SignStudio, note the screen's name, group and campaign so you can restore them.
  2. On the player, make it forget its registration. The troubleshooting guide documents the per-platform route: on Android, force stop SignPlayer and clear its app data, which requires re-registration; on Windows, reinstall SignPlayer from the Downloads page in your account; on a Raspberry Pi, re-run the SignPlayer install script from the Downloads page. On a Mac, reinstall SignPlayer Desktop for Mac the same way.
  3. Open SignPlayer. It shows a new registration code.
  4. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer, enter the code, then rename the screen, put it back in its group and assign its campaign.
  5. Publish and wait for the download to finish. The player caches the campaign again from scratch, so a large playlist can take several minutes on a slow connection.

Our documentation does not describe an in-app unregister button on the player; the routes above are the documented ones. If you want to keep the old screen record in SignStudio rather than create a new one, ask support at support@digitalsignage.com, live chat at https://chat.digitalsignage.com/ or +1-877-344-7446 for the current procedure before you clear the player.

Move a screen to another account

A screen belongs to one account at a time. Moving it, for example from an integrator's account to the customer's own, or from a closed location to a new company, follows the re-registration steps with one difference at the end.

  1. Sign in to the account that currently owns the screen and remove or retire the screen record there, so it stops counting toward that account's screens. The exact place to do this in the current SignStudio version is not covered on this site; support will point you to it.
  2. Clear the app data or reinstall the player as above, so it shows a new code.
  3. Sign in to the destination account in SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter the new code. Or tap register manually on the player and sign in with the destination account's email and password.
  4. Assign a campaign in the destination account and publish.

Billing follows the account: a screen that moves out of an account with 4 or more screens reduces that account's bill at the next cycle, and a screen that moves into an account that already has 3 free screens makes that account billable for all 4. The pricing FAQ has the numbers.

When a device factory reset is needed

Most problems never need one. Use a factory reset of the device, as opposed to reinstalling the player, when:

  • The operating system is corrupt, for example an Android box or Chromebox in a boot loop, which the black screen guide lists as a last resort.
  • You want to enroll an Android device in device-owner (kiosk) mode. The Android platform guide notes that device owner is set at provisioning and cannot be added later without a factory reset.
  • A Chrome OS device must be powerwashed before enrollment in Google Admin.
  • The device changes hands and must not carry the previous owner's Wi-Fi, accounts or files.

After the reset, reinstall SignPlayer (and the Watchdog on Android), set the device to start the player on boot, and register it as a new screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I re-register a SignPlayer with DigitalSignage.com?

Make the player show a fresh registration code, then register it again. On Android, force stop SignPlayer and clear its app data; on Windows or Mac, reinstall SignPlayer Desktop from the Downloads page in your account; on a Raspberry Pi, re-run the install script. Open SignPlayer, read the new code and type it into SignStudio under Register SignPlayer, then restore the screen's name, group and campaign.

Can I move a digital signage screen to another DigitalSignage.com account?

Yes. Retire the screen in the account that owns it, clear the player's app data or reinstall it so it shows a new registration code, then enter that code in the destination account under Register SignPlayer, or tap register manually on the player and sign in with the destination account. Assign a campaign there and publish.

Does resetting a SignPlayer delete the cached content?

Clearing the cache or the app data deletes the local copy of the campaign, and the player downloads it again after it is registered and a campaign is assigned. A simple restart or reboot keeps the cache. Allow time for large playlists to download before judging the result.

Do I need to factory reset an Android box to re-register it?

No. Clearing SignPlayer's app data is enough to get a new registration code. A factory reset is only needed when the operating system is damaged or when you want to enroll the device in Android device-owner kiosk mode, which cannot be added without one.

Is there an unregister button in SignPlayer?

Our documentation does not describe one. The documented routes are clearing the app data on Android, reinstalling the desktop player on Windows or Mac, or re-running the Raspberry Pi install script, after which the player shows a new code. Ask support if you need a different procedure for your setup.

Does moving a screen change what I pay?

Billing follows the account. The first 3 screens in an account are free forever; once an account has 4 or more screens, every screen is billed from $3 per screen per month on Plus+. A screen that leaves an account lowers that account's count, and a screen that joins an account already at 3 makes all 4 billable.

Try it on your own screens, free

DigitalSignage.com, which publishes this guide, runs a permanent free plan: the first 3 screens are free forever (no credit card, no ads, no watermark, no time limit), then from $3 per screen per month on Plus+. Once an account has 4 or more screens, every screen is billed, so 10 screens cost $360 a year; Enterprise is priced per screen in the public price calculator. The free DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer runs on Windows, Mac, Android and Android TV, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi, iPad or any modern web browser, so the hardware you already own usually works.
