SignPlayer status, screenshots and logs: see what a screen is doing

Quick answer: DigitalSignage.com shows every screen's state on the Screens dashboard in SignStudio: online, offline, warning, syncing or paused, with the last check-in time, the content playing now, the IP address and the player version. Select a screen and click Screenshot to see what the DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer is showing at that moment, or send Restart Player, Reboot Device, Refresh Content or Clear Cache. Alerts cover offline players, failed content sync, low storage and high temperature, and a nightly restart can be scheduled. Player logs are reached through the dashboard; support will tell you which files to send.

What the Screens dashboard tells you

IndicatorMeaningWhat to do
OnlineConnected and playing contentNothing
OfflineNo connection to SignStudioCheck network and power; the player keeps playing its cached content
WarningAn issue was detectedOpen the alert
SyncingDownloading contentWait for it to finish
PausedIntentionally pausedResume if it should be playing

Each screen also reports its last seen time, the content currently playing, its IP address, the player version and system information. On a Raspberry Pi, the SignService daemon adds CPU temperature, memory and storage. The player talks to SignStudio over a real-time socket connection and falls back to HTTP polling behind a strict firewall, so a status change normally shows within a minute or two without any inbound ports or a static IP.

An offline status is not the same as a black screen. SignPlayer plays from its local cache through an outage; offline means SignStudio cannot reach the player right now, which is why a screen can be dark on site while showing online, or offline while still playing. Use a screenshot to tell the two apart.

Take a remote screenshot

  1. Open the Screens dashboard in SignStudio and select the screen.
  2. Click Screenshot. The player captures what it is displaying at that moment.
  3. Compare the image with the campaign you expect. A frozen scene, an old price or a sign-in page shows up here.
  4. Save or share the image if you need to send it to support or a site manager.

A screenshot shows the player's output, not the panel. If the screenshot is correct but the screen on site is dark, the fault is the display, the input or the cable, and the black screen guide takes over.

Restart, reboot and the other remote commands

CommandWhat it doesUse it for
Restart PlayerRestarts the SignPlayer softwareA stuck or frozen player
Reboot DeviceRestarts the whole deviceSystem problems a player restart does not fix
Refresh ContentForces a content syncChanges that have not appeared yet
Clear CacheDeletes cached files, then re-downloadsOld content that keeps showing, storage or playback faults
Take ScreenshotCaptures the current displayVerifying content
Send MessageShows a pop-up message on the screenTesting, alerts
Update SoftwarePushes a player updateNew version rollout
Adjust VolumeChanges the audio levelScreens with sound
Toggle DisplayTurns the screen on or offPower management

Restart commands usually execute within about 30 seconds. For several screens at once, select them and use Bulk Actions. A player that does not answer any command needs power cycling on site, or a smart plug.

Nightly restarts and alerts

The player management page documents scheduled maintenance: a nightly restart of all players at 3:00 AM, a weekly staged update window and a monthly cache clear on low-storage screens. A nightly restart during closed hours clears most slow-growing faults, such as memory creep in long web zones, before anyone notices.

Alerts are raised for a player going offline, a failed content sync, low storage, high temperature, an available software update and an expiring license, and can be delivered by email, SMS, webhook, Slack or in the dashboard. Set the offline alert to reach whoever is on site as well as IT, and act on a missed check-in within minutes rather than waiting for a customer to report a dark screen. Networks that are well run hold 99 percent uptime per screen or better, and 99.5 percent for menu boards and other customer-facing screens.

Logs: what exists and how to collect them

The player management page lists Logs among the diagnostic tools, described as viewing player log files, next to a network test and content verification. The black screen guide describes reviewing player logs through the dashboard, looking for playback errors and content load failures, and checking sync logs with the Last Sync timestamp. Our documentation does not publish the on-disk location of log files for each platform, so do not go hunting through the device; collect what the dashboard offers and let support ask for more.

When you contact support at support@digitalsignage.com, live chat at https://chat.digitalsignage.com/ or +1-877-344-7446, have this ready:

  1. The screen's name in SignStudio and the account email.
  2. The player hardware and operating system, and the player version from the dashboard.
  3. The exact error message, if any, and a photo of the physical screen plus a dashboard screenshot.
  4. What changed before the problem started, for example a new campaign, a firmware update or a network change.
  5. What you have already tried: restart, reboot, refresh, clear cache.

Support will tell you where any additional log files live on your platform and how to send them.

A simple daily routine

  1. Open the Screens dashboard and sort by status. Deal with offline and warning screens first.
  2. For anything that looks wrong, take a screenshot before you restart, so you have evidence of the fault.
  3. Send Restart Player, then Reboot Device if that does not help, and check the screenshot again.
  4. Check the last seen time of every screen once a day; a player that checks in only now and then usually has a Wi-Fi or power problem.
  5. Review alert settings monthly so they go to someone who can act.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my digital signage player is working?

Open the Screens dashboard in SignStudio. A working player shows online with a last seen time within minutes and the content it is playing. Click Screenshot to see exactly what it displays. If it is online but the screen on site is dark, the fault is the display, input or cable rather than the player.

Can I see what is on a screen remotely?

Yes. Select the screen on the Screens dashboard and click Screenshot; the player captures what it is showing at that moment. It is the fastest way to confirm a campaign went live, spot a frozen scene or check a screen you cannot see from your desk.

How do I restart a digital signage player remotely?

On the Screens dashboard select the player and click Restart Player for a software restart or Reboot Device for a full restart. Refresh Content forces a sync and Clear Cache re-downloads everything. Bulk Actions does the same for several screens, and a nightly restart can be scheduled for closed hours.

What does offline mean on the SignStudio dashboard?

SignStudio cannot reach the player right now, usually because of network, firewall, DNS or power. The player keeps playing its cached content, so offline does not always mean a blank screen. Check the cable or Wi-Fi, that outbound HTTPS on port 443 works, then restart the player or reboot the device.

Where are the SignPlayer log files?

The player management page lists Logs among the dashboard diagnostic tools, and the black screen guide describes reviewing player and sync logs through the dashboard. Our documentation does not publish per-platform file paths, so gather the dashboard information, the screen name, player version and a screenshot, and support will tell you what else to send.

Can I get an alert when a screen goes offline?

Yes. Alerts are documented for offline players, failed content sync, low storage, high temperature, available updates and expiring licenses, delivered by email, SMS, webhook, Slack or in the dashboard. Send the offline alert to someone on site as well as IT.
